About Dr. António Francisco Ambrósio

António Francisco Ambrósio (AFA) is a Coordinator Investigator and Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra (FMUC), Portugal. He leads the Retinal Dysfunction and Neuroinflammation Laboratory at the Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR-FMUC), a position he has held since 2002.

From 2016 to 2021, Dr. Ambrósio served as the Director of iCBR, contributing significantly to the institute’s global reputation in neuroscience and biomedical innovation. The iCBR is an active member of the Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CiBB) consortium, advancing interdisciplinary research in health sciences.

Currently, Dr. Ambrósio holds several esteemed positions, including:

  • Member of the Scientific Council of iCBR and CIBB

  • Member of the Ethical Committee of the Multidisciplinary Institute for Ageing (MIA)-Portugal

  • Member of the Scientific Committee of the PhD Program in Health Sciences at FMUC

  • Member of the Board of Directors of the Collaborative Laboratory VectorB2B – Drug Developing, representing the University of Coimbra

His leadership and contributions to neuroinflammation, retinal dysfunction, and translational neuroscience have positioned him as one of the foremost experts in his field. His ongoing work bridges the gap between fundamental neuroscience and clinical application, with a growing emphasis on how AI-driven tools can reshape neurosurgical care.
